Once or twice a year,
the San Francisco Performances offers a recital concert by a young and coming
classical musician. This time around, cellist Daniel Lee got the nod for
his San Francisco debut. Lee was accompanied by pianist Hyo-Sun Lim, and
together they performed Prokofiev's Sonata for Cello and Piano, Op. 119,
Piazzolla's Le Grand Tango, Britten's Cello Sonata in C Major, Op. 65 and
Brahms' Cello Sonata No.1 in E minor, Op. 38.
As the shows are free and general admission, there's generally quite a crowd
in attendance. Knowing this, I made plans to arrive early at the venue, and
happily was able to snag a pair of front-row seats for my buddy Nathan Wolfson
and myself.
The show was superb; Lee is truly a talent to keep an eye on! I particularly
enjoyed the duo's performance of Le Grand Tango. Joshua Kosman, reviewing
the show for the San Francisco Chronicle was similarly enthusiastic. Here's
the review: Daniel Lee Shows Precocious Command
of Cello.
If you'd like to read additional info about Lee, there's a biographical sketch
