Tom Lasho is visiting
us from Ann Arbor, Michigan, for a few days, so we decided to have our IS
Lunch that week. IS stood for Information Systems originally when I
started at Tumbleweed, but now, it stands for Information Services.
When my manager, Jones, came on board, he wanted to change the name of the
department to be Information Technology, but we are the Operations
portion of IT and want a name that distinguishes us, so we kept IS. Information
Technology just seemed so formal! It was also a form of rebellion manifesting
itself in this little detail. Once a month, we have an IS Lunch. With all
the cutbacks, the IS Lunches remained a tradition - a tradition which precedes
Jones, so we get to keep it.
Tom is the IT manager in Ann Arbor. He has a "dotted line" reporting to
me on the operations side and reporting to Jones on the other stuff. Most
of Tom's job is in operations, so what remains of the "other stuff" has always
puzzled us somewhat. We have a theory that Jones has to make sure as many
people report to him as the number reporting to me. Ah! The struggle for power!
