Ritual Site of Liu Benzun (No.21, A.D.1174-1252)
The niche, 1257 cm high, 2540 cm wide and 750 cm deep, houses 67 statues. Sitting in the middle of the upper part of the niche is the large statue of Liu Benzun who was a lay Buddhist in Leshan, Sichuan Province, in late Tang Dynasty. All four sides of the statue are images depicting Liu's 10 practices of asceticism and statues of his attendants. This niche has great academic value in the study of Tantric Buddhism history in China. |
